Hola Dabblers!
Did you toddle along to Ravenscar museum's open weekend? If not, I did it for you (you're welcome). If you're not interested, scroll on down, as this week we've got a few beginner-friendly events (even metalsmithing), as well as some talks to get your brain fired up (bonus if you're into space, ears, bats, or you know, the general state of the world).
Ravenscar - There was about a 30min~ line to get in, as they were at max capacity (thankfully it was sunny). Although it was free all weekend (which sounds like they don't do that often), it's only $25 usually, so I highly recommend visiting if you're into art and architecture. I'm not a massive art-head, but I did recognise a few artists' names, including one of my fave NZ artists, β¨Rueben Patersonβ¨ (known for his exploration of MΔori and European patterns (among many other things, of course) through his signature use of glitter).
"Your Pants are Putting on an X-rated Show" (2003)
I prefer contemporary art (the glass sculptures and vessels were π€), but appreciate some of the heritage pieces and craftspersonship and really went to admire the house itself. As I say, absolutely worth paying to go - what an incredible gift to the city π₯°β C.x β¨

π₯ This week in history: NZ's heaviest gold nugget was found by βMessrs Scott and Sharpeβ at Ross on the West Coast in 1909, and then subsequently purchased by a Ross storekeeper and his Canterbury associate (for Β£400). A cast of it was soon on show in Canterbury Museum. Weighing in at 3.09 kg (99.63 ounces), it was named the βHonourable Roddyβ after Minister of Mines Roderick McKenzie. In 1911 the βHon. Roddyβ was bought by the government and gifted to King George V. However, upon questioning (40 years later), it was found that the nugget had been melted down to make a royal tea service (Hope it made the English Brekkie taste nicer...) π«

Apparently worth around $300K today (at $3K p/ounce), though that's nothing on the nuggie found in Australia, clocking in at 71KG! (which someone in the comments mentioned would be worth around $7-11M today). β
CALL THEM OUT (OR CALL THEM ICONIC)
π Shout out to β¨Sarah and Richardβ¨ (and their helpers) for popping up at the Woolston Shabby Chic market on Sunday with their delicious treats - their baking has been missed sooo much (as evidenced by me getting the last Melting Moment, and it wasnβt even lunchtime)!

'Ello Dabblers! *Refrains from asking if you can believe we're halfway through November already* This week sees a few significant dates and anniversaries, and hopefully some rest, pottering (pottery-ing, if you want, too?) and sunshine (both internally and environmentally)- I'm eternally glad you're here (in all senses, too, but it might make more sense soon).Let's jump straight in. 'Ello Dabblers! A swift one for you this week, due to the fact that we were in the weeds (literally) doing actual manual labour and lost track of days π Please do hit reply and tell us what you got up to, or if you honoured the "absolutely nothing" task! This week, aside from the obvious π there are a bunch of festivals on - films, hip hop, Latin celebrations... Bonjour Dabblers! Happy almost-long weekend?! Lots of things happening that fall under "the (wider) arts" umbrella, a BUNCH of stuff happening in the coming days, and a (semi-deliberate) minimal amount on Mon/Tue, so you can recoup and explore your own things (or lack of things) π There were murmurs about having more events (and so choice) at a glance, so we're rolling with this quick-fire format again this week (plus there's so much on, it's way too hard to narrow down the cool stuff)!
